Buying a PreRoamed EarthRoamer: What to Know Before You Buy!
Buying an EarthRoamer was a lifelong dream for us and one of the biggest financial decisions we’ve ever made. It cost almost as much as our house, and realistically, it’s probably a one-time purchase. There wasn’t much room for error. We really wanted to get it right the first time.
From the beginning, we knew a brand-new, custom build wasn’t in the cards. The price point alone made that clear, and even if it hadn’t, the waitlist would have been tough to swallow. We didn’t want to put this dream on hold for years.
That’s what led us to EarthRoamer’s PreRoamed program.
What Makes PreRoamed So Appealing
We ended up buying a Certified PreRoamed EarthRoamer, which essentially means the vehicle had been previously owned, then brought back through the factory to be reconditioned and inspected. They’re generally indistinguishable from new.
PreRoamed vehicles fall under a pretty clear set of criteria: less than 50,000 miles and built within the last ten years. Every PreRoamed unit must pass the same comprehensive 500 plus point inspection that new vehicles undergo before delivery. This includes evaluation of mechanical systems, electrical systems, chassis, water and plumbing systems, and habitation components to ensure reliability and road readiness. It’s very different than buying something off a private listing where you’re piecing together the story yourself.
Buying PreRoamed also means skipping the waitlist. Instead of waiting months (or longer) for a custom build, you can get on the road almost immediately.
There’s also something reassuring about buying a vehicle that’s already been out in the world. These trucks have been used, tested, and lived in. You’re not the very first person discovering how everything works and likely won’t be having to make initial tweaks as the systems shake out.
The Tradeoffs
The biggest one is that you’re stepping into a vehicle where systems already have some wear on them. Things will eventually need to be repaired or replaced sooner than they would on a brand-new build. That’s just part of buying something that’s already been used.
You also give up the ability to fully customize from the start. What you see is (mostly) what you get. That said, depending on the setup, there are still opportunities to swap or upgrade certain features over time.
What We’ve Seen From Other Owners
We’re not the only ones who went this route. We’ve met a lot of EarthRoamer owners who bought PreRoamed for similar reasons—either to save on cost or to get on the road sooner. Some even buy PreRoamed while they’re waiting for a custom build to be completed.
One thing that’s stood out across the board is how much pride people take in these vehicles. Owners maintain them well, fix things quickly, and genuinely care about keeping them in great shape. That carries over to the PreRoamed inventory. You’re not just buying any old used vehicle, you’re often stepping into something that’s been well cared for and thoughtfully used. The owners we know who have traded theirs in to upgrade have said it feels a little like saying goodbye to a family member, which tells you everything about how these rigs are treated.
Our Take
For us, PreRoamed was the right decision. It gave us a way into the EarthRoamer world without waiting years or stretching beyond what felt financially responsible. We’d make the same choice again without hesitation. EarthRoamer has treated us like brand-new customers the whole way through and has been incredibly helpful anytime we’ve needed support or had to work through a repair.
