A Day with the EarthRoamer LTx: Luxury, Power, and Coming Home Again
Ever since the day we picked up our LTS, we’ve been fascinated by the LTx. Sitting there in the shop EarthRoamer #001 looked like the ultimate off-road dream. So when we finally got the chance to spend a day with it, we were giddy.
I got to drive it first—just shuffling rigs around the parking lot—and even that short drive blew me away. It didn’t feel like a semi-truck. The steering was light, smooth, almost athletic. It felt like driving our Raptor, not a 20,000-pound overland vehicle. I couldn’t wait for Jacob to take it out on the open road.
But underneath the excitement, I had a tiny bit of nervousness. What if we fell in love with it too much? My family has this thing we call the ten-thousand-dollar bow phenomenon from when I was a kid shopping for my first violin. The maker offered to let me try a $10,000 bow, and I refused. I knew that once I felt how good that bow sounded, the one we could actually afford would never feel the same and I’d feel perpetually disappointed. Would driving the LTx be that moment for us?
Because this isn’t just any EarthRoamer. The LTx is the culmination of more than twenty years of innovation and owner feedback. It blends the best of the SX and LT models into one—refined, powerful, and shockingly well-balanced. We just wanted to see what “the best of the best” really felt like.
And it didn’t disappoint.
The 2025 Ford 550 platform gives it this quiet, composed ride—less noise, less vibration, more luxury. Add in the updated steering, shocks, and weight distribution, and it feels planted. Confident. On I-70 leaving Denver, it pulled hard up those 6–7% grades without breaking a sweat, cruising at 60 mph where our LTS would be maxed out at 45. On flat ground, you could comfortably hit up to 85 mph. It’s wild what that truck can do.
We didn’t baby it either. Even knowing how valuable it was (and that it wasn’t ours) it never felt fragile. The LTx feels built for adventure. The X-Guard coating gave us permission to relax about paint scratches, and the rest of the build felt like it could take anything we threw at it.
When we rolled back into the shop, we shared a few small notes with Scott, EarthRoamer’s CEO and one of our new favorite people. Nothing major, just a few “have you considered…” suggestions. Most of the time, he smiled and said, “Yep, already fixed that on the next one.” That’s the thing about EarthRoamer: every truck reflects real-time evolution. We’ve always loved how personal these rigs are. Each one is built by hand, by a team that takes real pride in their work. When employees say things like, “I wired your truck,” or “I built your cabinetry,” you realize how connected this whole community is—owners, builders—all united by a shared philosophy of adventure.
Twenty-four hours with the LTx definitely wasn’t enough. We found ourselves googling mortgage calculators (looks like the “pre-roamed” LTS is still home for now). But when we climbed back into our truck, it didn’t feel disappointing. It felt right. Familiar. Maybe because everything we own is exactly where we like it, or maybe just because it’s ours, but it wasn’t the heart-sinking feeling I expected after getting a taste of luxury compounding luxury.
That little fear I had at the start—the ten-thousand-dollar bow—didn’t come true. The LTx is extraordinary, but it didn’t make us love our LTS any less. If anything, it made us appreciate it more. Because even after getting to test-drive what’s next, coming home to what’s ours still feels just as good.
