From Telluride to Moab: Learning What Our EarthRoamer Can Really Do

We picked up the Rimrocker Trail in Naturita after finishing Last Dollar Road near Telluride, heading west toward Moab. Starting from this point gave us a solid dose of rugged backcountry right out of the gate—no gentle warm-up here. The trail wastes no time reminding you why it’s considered one of the standout overland routes in the West.

The early miles were a mix of rocky climbs and tight, twisty turns that kept us on our toes. Nothing too technical, but just enough to make you pay attention and appreciate having a capable rig under you. As we climbed higher, the terrain opened up into wide canyon vistas, all red rock and big sky.

Camping along the Rimrocker was one of the highlights. We found quiet pullouts with incredible views. It felt like we had the entire trail to ourselves.

As we continued west, the landscape shifted constantly; dense forests giving way to red rock mesas and narrow shelf roads that demanded full focus, especially in a larger vehicle. Those exposed sections deliver some of the best views on the route, but they’ll test your nerve if heights aren’t your thing.

Navigation was easy with ONX and Trails Offroad. The route’s well-marked, and we never had trouble staying on track. Still, the Rimrocker was no casual cruise—it was our first truly technical trail. Rated easy to moderate, it turned out to be a mix of both. Some stretches rolled by effortlessly, while others had us hopping in and out of the truck for spotting, figuring things out one obstacle at a time.

It turned out that the first day was the majority of the trail and out biggest learning moments. We aired down the tires for the first time and eased into sections that left my heart pounding. Every careful line we picked gave us a clearer sense of what the EarthRoamer (and we) could handle.

The Rimrocker didn’t feel impossible, but it definitely made us work for it. Mostly, it helped me learn how capable these trucks are, and how much more confident we’ll be the next time we air down and head out.
